READING
The English scholar Bacon stated that man is complete by reading for many reasons. The knowledge that is spread all over the world comes to us mainly through reading books. In modern society there are several ways in which human knowledge can be developed. It is clear that by participating in public lectures, radio and television, and traveling, man's knowledge expands and his intellect expands. Above all, we can easily acquire knowledge through books written by various scholars from all over the world.
A large number of books have been written on every subject in the world today. These are written in different languages. Books written in various languages around the world have been translated into world languages, such as English and French. Therefore, it is not difficult for those who know one or two of these languages to read as many books as possible to improve their knowledge and make their lives successful. Reading valuable books written in a language like Sinhala is of benefit to the Sinhalese. There were not many books written in Sinhala a long time ago. The people of our country have benefited from the loving reading of the few ancient literary books that have survived for thousands of years, facing the critique of time. Amawathura, Buthsarana, Poojavaliya, Saddharma Ratnavaliya, Five Hundred and Fifty Jataka Book etc. provided the people of both worlds with prosperity.
We need to read modern literature and acquire knowledge of our ancient literature. This is why the great Russian writer Maxim Gorky says, "In order to make progress in modern Soviet literature, Russia's ancient literature must be equated with universal literature." Knowledge of universal literature as well as ancient literature is essential in those of us who strive to develop modern Sinhala literature. We now have a large number of books written in Sinhala. Our own novels, short stories and poems as well as versions of some of the greatest works of universal literature are now available in Sinhala. In order for Sinhala literature to thrive, our readers must read valuable books written in Sinhala. The authors of those books are also encouraged to sell as much as they can.
On the other hand, it is clear that the younger generation is accustomed to reading books for their own good and development. It is no secret that even among school-age children, book readers excel at others. The more people who read books written in a particular language, the greater the knowledge of that language. He is also able to write letters correctly in that language. Many who became great writers did so by improving their writing skills by reading books.
Reading books does not only increase one's knowledge of languages. He has a considerable knowledge of various subjects. Read not only exam books but also external books as much as possible. The reader can gain a good knowledge of the society by reading novels, short stories etc. for entertainment. For this, they should choose high quality novels that describe life and society, not horror stories about low - level pornography and crime written to win the hearts of children.
One of the most valuable books to read by the younger generation is the stories of great people. This gives the reader the courage to move towards greatness. Everyone has the ability to succeed in life by developing a passion for reading and choosing the right books to read.
